The birds are chirping and the weather is hot. Summer is definitely upon us. For the next couple of months we can expect a solid lineup of new summer songs and a lot of summer film reruns. We’ve taken a quick look in the past to find our favorite songs from light-hearted summery films.
How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You by Marvin Gaye | American Pie
For anyone who grew up in the 90’s, American Pie is one of those films you can watch over and over again. The soundtrack is equally legendary, featuring 90’s bands such as Blink 182, Green Day and Good Charlotte and who doesn’t remember the final Marvin Gaye duet between two of the teenagers?
Twist and Shout by The Beatles | Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Nothing can go wrong for Ferris Bueller in one of the most happy-go-lucky summer films of all time. The film that made Matthew Broderick a living legend also brought the entire population of New York City together in a live performance of ”Twist and Shout” – with Broderick as the lead singer.
Summer Nights by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John | Grease
Words aren’t necessary here. This song will power up any dead dance floor anywhere and at any time!
Kokomo by The Beach Boys | Cocktail
There’s no way you can talk about songs in summer films without mentioning ”Kokomo”. You happen to be enjoying a colourful cocktail at some coastal bar on Pacific island, you simply have to put on this song. And of course it was a perfect choice for ”Cocktail”.
Take My Breath Away by Berlin | Top Gun
Alright, we’re done with Tom Cruise films after this one. If you haven’t warched the intimate scene between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in ”Top Gun” you better start now. ”Take My Breath Away” also won the Oscar for best song that year.
Pure Shores by All Saints | The Beach
His lust for adventure takes Leonardo DiCaprio’s character to a secluded island in this summery drama. Used in a very romantic setting, ”Pure Shores” works wonders as the soundtrack to youthful love.
Super Freak by Rick James | Little Miss Sunshine
This film should be on everyone’s film bucket list. There are plenty of memorable scenes, but the climactic performance by the main character with ”Super Freak” as the background song is definitely one of the most entertaining scenes in recent times.
I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler | The Way Way Back
Even though ”I Need A Hero” isn’t exactly played out during this coming-of-age film, actor Sam Rockwell does a hilarious reference to the legendary 80’s hit when he attempts to find a brave volunteer to unclog a water slide tube.
Bad Girls by Donna Summer | Everybody Wants Some
The soundtrack to Richard Linklater’s ”Everybody Wants Some” is packed with legendary hits in a wide range of genres, so it’s difficult to pick a favorite. I’ve always had a soft spot for disco though, so I have to go with the amazing ”Bad Girls” by Donna Summer.
The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens | The Sandlot
”The Sandlot” isn’t one of the best movies of all time, but it’s a great coming-of-age childhood classic with a great soundtrack and a solid performance by its cast. In this film, ”The Lion Sleeps Tonight” works wonders as a clear reference to the film’s antagonist: the dog (aka. the Beast).
